Small Dogon Granary Door

Approx 11-12 inches Tall X 9-10 inches Wide

The Dogon people live in cliffside villages in Central Mali and they use a hard wood to hand carve these granary doors. The doors are constructed from smaller pieces of wood that a connected together with handmade metal hardware.

A husband will have his own granary to store grain, mostly millet. Women are financially independent and keep their own possessions in their granary that men are not allowed access to. Woman may keep pottery or other handcrafts in their granary. The window-like openings on the granaries are covered with these doors which have simple, functioning latches. The posts sticking up on top and bottom serve as hinges for the door as they rest in holes.

Doors usually depict ancestor spirits - there are 8 original ancestor families that are normally depicted on the doors. Most doors also show Kanaga masks. Over 70 different types of ceremonial masks are used by the Dogon, but their exact usages are closely held secrets.
